All learning lab deployments, regardless of their size or the devices used, require software and applications (content) in order to operate: it is often the most user-specific element of the deployment. Appropriate and local educational content for the developing world provides access to instruction materials, the Internet and e-learning tools. Locally relevant content, as in the case of public health awareness, can lead to an increased rate of disease reporting, access to diagnostic processes and have the potential to save lives.
CompuTainer and AMD
CompuTainer has provided e-Health educational software for the devices deployed by AMD and other 50x15 partners for many learning labs in Africa. CompuTainer has supplied all of the e-Health content to the NEPAD e-Schools 50x15 Learning Labs, and has worked with AMD and NEPAD on deployments in Uganda, Mali, Gabon and Burkina Faso.
CompuTainer also has been a major contributor to learning labs in South Africa and continues to work with Nedbank and AMD to develop 50x15 Learning Labs across the country.
Mission
CompuTainer strives to reduce the new infection rate of HIV and other diseases by affordably providing information and education to Africa’s citizens.
Vision
The vision of CompuTainer is to lower new disease infections rates by affordably providing mass awareness, mass education, mass prevention techniques, mass medication compliance technology, mass supply of status checking kits and mass supply of nutritional supplements.
CompuTainer collaborates with local communities, private corporations, NGOs, international organizations and governments in Africa that wish to use mass interventions against HIV, AIDS, TB and malaria. CompuTainer works to combat these diseases in several ways:
Mass awareness campaigns: From HIV playing cards to board games for pre-teens, CompuTainer has several programs to raise community awareness of the consequences of dealing with HIV and AIDS.
- Mass education: CompuTainer has been providing high-quality digital education since its inception. By using interactive kiosks, interactive CDs and DVDs and hard loading in PC devices, hundreds of thousands of people have been successfully trained on the e-Health content including in-depth education on HIV, AIDS, TB and malaria. Interactive CD and DVD collections are now available with a complete selection of e-Health content in English, French and Arabic.
- Mass prevention: For many years, CompuTainer has been working with some of Africa’s largest corporations to develop programs that encourage HIV and AIDS prevention. Programs range from 24-hour-a-day, multilingual call centers that provide professional counseling to post exposure HIV status checking to condom supply for both males and females.
- Mass compliance encouragement: CompuTainer offers several products and services that help patients remember to take their medication using their mobile phones. If a patient does not have a mobile phone, they are provided a handset by CompuTainer for the duration of their treatment. If a patient maintains a 90 percent compliance for the duration of their treatment, they are allowed to keep the phone.
- Mass testing: CompuTainer has contracted with various suppliers to provide rapid testing kits to community organizations. CompuTainer provides high quality and highly accurate rapid test kits to facilities that conduct pre and post counseling sessions.
CompuTainer is run on social enterprise principles and is registered as a private company in South Africa.
